BloodRayne Betrayal Review

2D Hack and slash your way through evil Nazis as Agent Rayne, a female half vampire employed by the government who is on a mission to dispose of those that are unwelcome…….. That’s as far as I can go because I have no idea what the story was about or what was going on!

With just three areas to explore and cover in blood, BloodRayne does not have a lot to look at. The art is nice but Louisiana, Argentina and Germany should have been cooler than they turned out to be. Characters look crisp and the fighting looks fluid but maintaining the fluidity is very hard and annoying.

Running around brutally killing enemies is pretty good to start with but after a while you realise it is a “rinse and repeat” all the way through the game and quite quickly gets boring. A sense of “Been there, done that” is often felt.  Only a limited amount of combos can be used and a clunky control scheme that never feels right makes this game a chore.

The controls are horrible and unresponsive.  You fight using one button, moving the character from one place to the next whether it be fighting or moving on to the next section.  After a while of not having a clue what I was meant to be doing a hint briefly (literally for 1 second) came up telling me what to do.  I done exactly what it was saying for about half hour before I accidentally managed to continue the level. I was being told to do a very basic move but it just wasn’t happening.  This was hugely frustrating because not only were the controls horrible but the hint system also.

Throughout the game obviously you are going to need a way of gaining health and what better way to do this than drinking blood.  Once hurt, Rayne can grab and drink the blood of her foes or failing this you can regain health at a blood fountain.  This idea is cool and a great change to the usual health pack and food consumption that we often see in games.

Overall the game may look alright in some places but it does a lot wrong throughout.  Bad movements, unhelpful hint system, forgettable story (that I did not get) and no real sense of exploration, BloodRayne to me is a game that will easily be forgotten and will soon be in the bargain bucket.
