Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot Review
Cubit the Hardcore Platfomer Robot is a 2D-Sidescroller by the talented bunch at CoderChild.
Similar to Xbox 360’s impossible game, Cubit the Robot constantly moves and your only input is jumping, which can be performed by pressing any button that you choose on the face of the console. Having such a small task to do may leave you thinking that the game is going to be easy, but this is far from the case. Cubit is a very unforgiving game that will punish you for the slightest mistake. Like Super Meat Boy, any mistake and death is totally your fault leaving you with no one else but yourself to blame.
Whilst plodding along on your way to the end of the level you will encounter checkpoints. These checkpoints are a little too far apart which adds to the frustration that the game already has caused. I’d bet money on 90% of gamer’s rage quitting within the first 20 minutes of playing, only to come back, complete the game, and totally love it….. This is what happened with me. Towards the end of the level you are able to see (on the touch screen) 3 exit routes. Each exit is unique and offers a different challenge and outcome. The outcome is the unlocking of new characters and challenge awards.
I was hoping for a Super Meat Boy like ending to the level whereby you can watch a replay of all your fails in one great video. Never mind, there’s always next time.
Now the most disappointing part of the game….. It took me 42 minutes and 136 fails to complete what I thought was the first level, but it ended up being the whole game. Yes, the game is made of just one level. There is a hardcore mode which has you completing the same level but limits your lives to 3; obviously this makes the game harder to complete but that’s it. Personally, I would have liked at least 10 levels but thought that there’d be closer to 50. It was a shock and I felt let down by CoderChild.
Apart from the great feeling that you get when you complete the game, the best part is the music. When the tunes really kick in it’s like an old-school hard-house night at Camden Palace , London, with all it’s weird and wonderful beats.
Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot is a great title for the 3DS system bringing and a game worth playing for those that seek the difficulty only seen in Super Meat Boy, Spelunky and Dark Souls. The game could have been better, not just by moving the checkpoints slightly but buy adding more levels. If the game was going to cost more than £3 I’d say leave it for now, but as it stands, it will cost less than £3 and for the most part, you’ll get your monies worth.
