Cut the Rope: Triple Treat Review

With the majority of the world having smart phones and/or tablets, mobile gaming has gotten huge. There are an array of games both free and paid for that offer great gameplay and massive re-playability.

With the success of the title on the mobile platform the developers have pushed out to the home console, PC and handheld consoles in order to reach a larger audience as well as make the extra cash.

There’s one big gripe; when the games are on the smart phone and tablet, they’re free or no more than a couple of quid, but when the game comes to the home console, they charge is borderline extortionate.

Let’s see if cut the rope: triple treat 3DS is worth your money.

‘Cut the Rope’ is a skill game that has you solving puzzles in order to feed ‘On Nom’, a little green monster with an adorable face that you want nothing more than to please. On Nom will sit somewhere on the screen with candy locate somewhere else, usually attached to a piece of string(s), you need to cut that string so that the candy ends up in On Nom’s mouth in as few moves as possible whilst also collecting stars. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds because the candy isn’t always directly above On Nom’s head allowing you to just “Cut the Rope” so that it falls in to On Nom’s mouth; the candy is sometimes held by many pieces of string all of different lengths and other obstacles may be in the way, also…

At the end of each round you’re scored a maximum of 3 stars (similar to the Angry Bird scoring) 1 being not great and 3 being a perfect run; and this is where the re-playability has a big play. You know how it feels to get 1 star when you could have 3 and you can see how simple the puzzle would be once you know it, so here you are racking your brain settling for nothing less than perfection.

The 3DS is a great console for ‘Cut the Rope’ to be released on due to the touch-screen. Cutting the rope is just a stylus-swipe away and you’re on to the next level. Apart from that, the 3DS it self doesn’t add much.

The only gripe I have with this brilliant game is the price-tag. There is no way that ‘Cut the Rope: Triple Treat’ or any other smart phone game is worth a retail price above £10. Yes you can lend, swap, trade etc, but at the end of the day it’s pretty much a port of a game that was free or no more than £2. Also, as nice as it is to hold a game and its case, there isn’t really much point in releasing the title retail at all, this is and should stick to being a digital game.
If you have a smart phone, get ‘Cut the Rope’ for that device, but if you don’t have a smart phone but you do have a 3DS, get ‘Cut the Rope’ for the 3DS when the price is a little more realistic ie £5 - £10

8/10
