Far Cry 4 Review
Ubisoft are on a roll at the moment because of the great releases that have been hitting the shelves recently and now with Far Cry 4 available to the masses it’s set to continue.
Far Cry 4 takes place in ‘Kyrat,’ a fictional place based on the Himalayan region of Nepal which is ruled by a crazy man known as King Pagan Min.
You’ve come to Kyrat from America because your mother’s last wish was to have her ashes dispersed within the region – but it would appear that she may have had an ulterior motive. As you arrive you’re near instantly dragged into the civil war which is going on between Pagan Min and ‘The Golden Paths’ which was an organisation started by your parents.
The story progresses at a great pace and offers a massive and diverse map to explore with many missions to keep you busy. The main missions give you a choice to choose a side and the side-missions are similar to what they were in Far Cry 3 – such as hunting, hostage rescue, races and Assassination’s. You still take over areas and disperse cloud to uncover the map by taking over radio towers. These small missions are relatively simple and once at the top, offer great views and a cool zip-line to play with.
Exploring the world is simple thanks to a large supply of cars, boats, ATV and the odd hovercraft and micro-copter…. My only issue is that I’d rather not have to use the analogue sticks to accelerate etc. On top of the expected vehicles you have access to a grapple-hook which makes it much easier and fun to navigate the cliff edges.
During your massive exploration tasks you will come across a massive amount of wildlife, whether it is the plants that you need for syringes or the animals themselves. Ranging from Eagles to bears and Fish to elephants there is something for every David Attenborough lover…. Killing them for their skin can be quite funny, too.
Carrying out tasks rewards you with XP and money which you can use to increase certain attributes and purchase new equipment. Depending on how much you’ve completed in game depends on what is available to you. Attributes range from riding elephants to taking out enemies in new stealthier ways, but overall there is a great selection to suite your play-style.
Weapons seem really expensive but when you realise how easy it is to get a bit of cash you don’t mind much – and it won’t take you long to find a favourite set of weapons and then everything is irrelevant.
Those with internet and friends will be very pleased to hear that Far Cry 4 offers a Co-op and PvP modes. Co-op is fantastic and leaves the game open to a load of fun hours of hunting, exploring and general funny stuff. PvP on the other hand doesn’t really offer anything that would make you leave your already favourite FPS of choice.
Far Cry 4 looks great visually and plays great (now that the server issues are resolved) but it is definitely lacking where it didn’t in Far Cry 3. The problem with Far Cry 4 is that it doesn’t have a civilised real world feel to it. You’ll bump into random events and earn rewards, collect items and take over bases, but overall it feels a little redundant. Having said that, it’s still a great game that any Far Cry fan will love and should definitely be on your list of games to play.
8/10
