FEZ Review

FEZ is a 2D platform game in a 3D world…. WHAT?!?! Seriously it is.

Story

You are Gomez, a small, cute, Fez wearing being. A being living in what he believes is a 2D world until a strange and powerful artifact reveals to him the existence of a mysterious third dimension!

Gameplay/Controls

Picture a cube and yourself looking directly at it. You can only see one side but there are three other sides that you can look at by rotating it. And this is how FEZ works. If you want to be on a different side press LT or RT and the screen will rotate 90 degrees. This isn’t just about rotating a screen and looking at a different side to what appears to be a 2D world.
Rotating will be used in order to reach higher ledges, climbing walls that carry on from the face you are currently climbing etc. This a genius build and is something not seen before in games.

The idea is to travel to different worlds, locations through doors and warp gates in order to collect cubes. Collecting the cubes will open doors to new areas and put you that much closer to bringing the world back to how it was.

On your travels you will also find treasure chest which contain keys to unlock doors and treasure maps which show secret areas or objects not visible to the eye, that will allow you to reach that one annoying cube that seems impossible to get.

FEZ is super tough. Going from A to B is a long process filled with mind bending puzzles and hard to reach areas. I have honestly never been stuck in a video to the extent that I have been in FEZ.

This can obviously be frustrating and feel impossible at times, but the answer is there somewhere.

Navigating the world is another downside for me. Looking at the map is a puzzle in itself and knowing where you want to go but not how to get there is probably the biggest annoyance.

At one point I was getting so frustrated at now knowing how to navigate the world that I just stopped playing. If something is that hard and you’re not progressing you feel that carrying on is pointless…… After an hour of thinking and half hour of moaning to my other half I started to work it out. (Sort of)

The controls are simple enough. Press LT and RT to rotate the screen, A to jump, B to talk to other beings, X is action and Y to open your inventory. All of the controls respond as they should and again like Super Meat Boy, any mistake made is your fault and not the game design.

Visuals/Sounds

Taking you back about 15-20 years FEZ is an 8 bit masterpiece. Blocky worlds and bright colours are everywhere and very welcome on my console. To be honest I don’t think FEZ would have worked if it wasn’t 8 bit, anything too smooth would have ripped its overall uniqueness apart.

The soundtrack for FEZ is that of the old NES days. There is not much else to say about the music because "NES" says it all…. brilliance

Overall

FEZ is a great and everyone should buy it. There are a few annoyances on your travels and the game is a little overhyped, but still, shouldn’t be missed..
