Iron Brigade Review
Double Fine finally releases Iron Brigade to us Europeans, but was this third person tower defence game worth the wait?
You play as a 1940’s soldier that specialises in piloting BIG and HEAVY wrecking machines. Your objective is to defend bases that are being attacked by wave after wave of enemies and to do this you will need to have equipped the right guns and put down the right emplacements.
The game does not change during the entire campaign. Protect your base(s) and collect scrap in order to place and upgrade emplacements. You gain scrap from killing enemies and collecting the debris that they leave laying around.
When you have enough scrap you can place guns, mines, anti air, repair stations etc and also upgrade them to make them more powerful and have better range. At the end of each level you are paid for your work and this money is vital! Use the money earned to upgrade your mech and buy new parts so that the next time you are on the battlefield, you are a force to be reckoned with.
The game itself is what you would expect from Double Fine and by this I mean funny, tongue in cheek and very fun to play. There are some “laugh out loud” cinematics and story telling and great characters, one being your general.
The game looks great and has a large selection of locations including Africa and Europe. (Not that they look like the actual places) New enemies are slowly introduced giving you more of a challenge and the need to switch up tactics.
The controls are pretty nice apart from running which feels wrong and clunky. You cannot run and direct at the same time leaving you with the only option of running in a straight line. This ruins the game slightly for me but more often than not I was too busy worrying about my base than the lack of a decent sprinting option.
Overall the game is very fun and with the addition of online co op this game could have you looting to make the best mech for hours.
I think the majority will play the trial and go on to buy the game and for those who don’t……. you’re missing out.
