LEGO: Ninjago Nindroids Review

Unlike the usual LEGO games, LEGO Ninjago Nindroids is not based off of a film or book, but instead their very own Ninjago universe. It makes for a nice change, but without the popular name(s) in the title, will video game fans dig into their pockets and give it a go?

The story has you recovering the Technoblades – very powerful weapons that if in the hands of the evil overlord, will end up being used to turn the city of Ninjago to ruins….again! Fight through the robotic Ninja masses known as Nindroids and keep the city of Ninjago a safe and friendly place to live.Yes, it’s your typical good vs evil and that’s pretty much as far as that goes!

Gameplay is exactly as you’d expect from a LEGO game with its “smashing everything up” and switching character nature, and as you know if you’ve read my previous LEGO reviews, I’m not a massive fan, but I am more than happy to give each and every game a go with hope of improvements to make it more to my taste.
Fighting is simple yet effective and looks good enough baring in mind the power of the Nintendo 3DS console. Tapping “Y” frantically has you swinging your sword around slicing and dicing enemies and whilst landing hits, a combo meter fills. Once you hit 12 on the meter you can press the “L” button and unleash a special move which has you spinning around the level wiping everything out with massive damage. It looks cool but you only need to see it once or twice.

New to the handheld LEGO games is the ability to jump. Being able to jump definitely gives you more control and the feeling of being able to explore and evade much better, but due to the dodgy camera you’ll (at times) end up over a ledge or missing a grab rail. It’s very frustrating, but I am glad they added it to the game.

Visually LEGO Ninjago Nindroids does as much as it can with what it was given. The Nintendo 3DS console isn’t the most powerful of handhelds, but what it lacks in power it makes up for in gameplay.. usually… sadly, LEGO Ninjago Nindroids takes that away just a little.

Lego Ninjago Nindroids is just another game of LEGO people and their fight to protect and serve. The game is boring, repetitive and frustrating; leaving the only good thing about it in the title, “LEGO” and this is the only thing that will also help it do better when it comes to sales. If LEGO Ninjago Nindroids was just another Ninja game with no “LEGO” in the title, you’d probably be able to buy it for £10 brand new and people would accept its lack of immersion, and this is where the very common issue comes that people will buy something based on its name rather than its quality.
