Murdered: Soul Suspect Review

Ronan O’Conner is an ex-con turned police detective with a shaky upbringing. He is covered in tattoos, sort of a mural to his past and present and this is all because he received his first tattoo from his father. His father wanted him to wear each crime that he committed so that he never forgot the wrong that he did. Ronan clearly got a taste for the ink and evidenced his life through it; sort of a gangland style.

Ronan wanted to change and turn his life in a better direction. He didn’t just want this for himself, but also his wife. Luckily, Ronan’s brother-in-law was able to help steer Ronan onto the right path and Ronan started to redeem himself... Ronan believed in “Karma”.

Ronan has attended an incident which has ended in tragedy. Ronan is killed and now seeks answers to his death and the other murders that have occurred and later occur that he feels may be connected.

You’ll travel the town of “Salem” trying to find clues, attending crimes scenes and using your new found abilities to your advantage.

Ronan is able to travel through most walls due to him being a ghost, but he also has other abilities. Theses abilities include, Possess which allows Ronan to mind-read, influence and even peek through the eyes of those possessed in order to view the document they have in front of them.

The story in Murdered: Soul Suspect is very good and had me constantly questioning and wanting to move onto the next part. The three issues for me are; the constant findings of info both relevant and irrelevant to the investigation. I know that the evidence is the most important, but I can’t help but feel annoyed when I have to stop every few steps in order to granb a piece of information and collectible. Fewer stops would have been much appreciated so that I didn’t feel interrupted as often.

The next issue is your only real threat in the game which is the demons. They are horrible entities that will try to catch you and ruin your soul if you do not manage to hide or run from them. However, you can kill them if you manage to get behind them and complete a sequenced move.

Finally, when you have to come to a conclusion, you have to mark the relevant info to the investigation, so far, and this is sometimes totally baffling because it makes absolutely no sense. Seriously, it wasn’t my stupidity that caused total loss of understanding…. IT DIDN’T MAKE SENSE.

As well as the main mission, Salem you will have you encountering side-missions. These are brilliantly written small missions that have you solving the issues of other ghosts that have not completed their fulfilment or accepted their death. You will investigate their problem and hopefully solve it in order to allow them to feel complete and pass over into the next world. Lovely idea and to be honest, at times quite emotional.

Visually Murdered: Soul Suspect looks great. No, there isn’t anything amazingly-special about the look of the dark and eerie town,  but it definitely is good enough for you to be able to focus on the main (and best part) the story.

Overall  Murdered: Soul Suspect is your typical LA Noire title where you investigate, move on, investigate, move on etc, but it does a much better job than LA Noire ever did. The story is great, it looks great and the gameplay is smooth enough, it’s just a shame that there are a few little annoyances that ruin the experience at times.
