Nexuiz Review

Nexuiz is a fast paced arena based FPS produced by Illfonic.

Story

Nexuiz is a typical Red Vs Blue FPS with not much story.  The Kavussari and the Forsellians are at war but rather than putting the soldiers on the field they are made to settle their differences in the arena.

I didn’t  notice the story in the game and that suits me fine because it would feel pointless baring in mind this is all about the shooting.

Gameplay/controls

Based on the few games I had (No one was online) the game seemed to be pretty crap.  Nexuiz runs smoothly most of the time and the arenas are well laid out but that’s it.  Nexuiz is so boring and frustrating I didn’t want to play.  All of the guns are weak and feel like pea shooters, the game is so fast paced that you barely deserve the kill you get because you are just hoping a bullet will make contact whilst you are shooting frantically at anything that moves.

You can navigate the map collecting guns and armour and in order to get from one place to another you will either run or use what I call floor boosters and teleporters.  Floor boosters are the things that when stood on throw you over to another part of the map.

The teleporters are on all of the maps and  are crucial to survival when trying to get away from a shooting enemy.

If you get fed up with the online 4 Vs 4 MP and want to be alone you can always play against bots.  This is the same as the online TDM and CTF modes but without the annoyance of humans.

Nexuiz has 1 cool thing about it “Mutators” mutators are game changing abilities that can be collected by any soldier on the field or earned through greatness.  Ranging from jet packs to freezing your flag so that the enemy cannot collect it,. Mutators are great fun and possibly the only thing Nexuiz has going for it.

The controls are brilliant and this is because you can map them to whatever you want.  Every game should have this ability and I am really pleased that Illfonic added this.

Visuals

Visually Nexuiz looks very nice indeed.  Each arena has been built in fine detail and I honestly have nothing negative to say about any of them.

Overall

Nexuiz is an old school FPS definitely basing itself on other arena type games such as Quake and Unreal tournament.  The only difference is that Neuxiz has mutators and is nowhere near as good.

Even if you’re a fan of arena based FPS I wouldn’t recommend buying Nexuiz unless you have played the crap out of the trial and enjoyed it.

4/10
