Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Review

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is Japanese 2D side-scroller set in an 8-bit Tokyo.

You play as one of four members of the Kumon family, Mikoto, Waka, Itsuki or Yuzuha.  The Kumon family have been keeping the evil Phantom from regaining his dark powers, but on one bad day this all changes.

Whilst under attack, Phantom managed to escape and kidnapped Nagi in the process.  It’s down to you and your family to get Nagi back and destroy all evil in the process.

To be honest, the story is very briefly shown at the beginning and the end of each stage through Japanese voice, written dialogue (English) and is quickly forgotten once the action starts.

The gameplay is super smooth and an absolute joy.  There are few button combinations which we all expect from a hack n slash but they’re not overwhelming or complicated.  You will mainly try to get the maximum hit streak you can in order to gain the most money and gems. Collecting gems will allow you to do special moves and collecting cash will allow you to level up your character and spend points on attributes.

Levelling up is a little too fast and simple, and the level cap is 50 which I don’t think is high enough.  This doesn’t ruin the game but does make it fell as if you can max out too quickly without any real feel of progression.

The graphics of the game are your typical old school 8-bit with bright colours and 2D environments.  This looks great in HD and is always welcomed in my Xbox collection.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds does have on and offline co-op and a battle mode also.  I didn’t get to play the multiplayer much because it was too laggy and awful to play.  Although this is a huge downfall, I’d like to think that this problem will be rectified because the game would be great to play with others.

Overall I love Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds but there are a couple of online issues and no ability to loot and change weapons. It will take you just a couple of hours to complete Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds but luckily with different difficulties and characters to unlock there is some replay-ability.  These minor issues and lack of weapon looting ruins the game a little and because of this I will say that the game is worthy of a….
