Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare Review

It was a big shock to me personally when PvZ: Garden Warfare was announced because it is not your typical tower defence PvZ game that we have come to love, but instead a third-person shooter. Even though PvZ:GW looked great from videos, I was still a bit sceptical as to whether it would work well. The good news is it absolutely does!

Set in the vibrant and colourful locations that you would expect, such as a garden centre, cul-de-sac, Zombie house as well as many others, PvZ is an absolutely gorgeous game to look at and explore. The characters look crisp and comical, the maps are some of the best designs I’ve seen in a TPS and on top of all this, it is a family friendly game that also allows 12v12 online play.

At the beginning of a game you can choose from one of 4 characters. The Zombies team consists of a Foot Soldier, Engineer, scientist and all-star. And on the plant side you have the pea shooter, sunflower, cactus and chomper. Each of these characters have their own unique look as well as abilities and The good thing about PvZ is that no matter what team you’re on, you’ll only be beaten if the opposite team are better than yours… you’re thinking “yeah, obviously” but come on, we all know that there is usually a character or gun that everyone will use due to it being a little more overpowered. That’s not the case here!

The game modes consist of the Co-operative mode ‘Garden Ops’, which has you and your friends fending off zombies that are trying to overrun your garden and then the multiplayer competitive modes are ‘Team Vanquish’ and ‘Gardens and Graveyards’. The former is your typical team death match and the latter is your typical attack and defend where you not only attack and defend personally, but also have the ability to plant, plants or send off zombies thanks to consumables…more on that in a bit. ‘Garden ops’ is very hard and not that fun unless you have a team of people that are not only good but willing to cooperate properly in order to succeed. The competitive multiplayer modes are great fun to play because they’re quick and easy to get into.

During the match you will be awarded points based on what you do in order to help your team succeed, sort of like Xp. At the end of the match these points are converted into in-game currency which you can use in the sticker shop to buy sticker packs. The sticker packs vary in price from 1000 going up to 40,000 and contain consumables, characters, taunts and upgrades. At times you’ll unlock rare and super rare items and these are what you’re after to really stand out on the field.

There aren’t any really bad points but there are a couple of annoyances that need to be mentioned. At times, when you’re changing the appearance of your character the camera will be fixed above the head, this means that you cannot properly see what your new design looks like and make judement on whether you like it or not. The other problem is the occasional crashing. This is annoying at any time, but mostly when you’re coming up to the end of a GvG mode where you’re sure to be getting a load of money… Again, not huge issues, but issues nonetheless.

Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare was an unexpected treat that has really changed the way I think about EA. Very often EA get a bad name (and rightly so in some circumstances… COUGH* BF4 COUGH*) but on this occasion they have thrown it all back in the face of that haters and said “We’re not as bad as you think” and they’re right. Every person of every age needs to play this game because it’ll remind them that games don’t always need to be so serious in order to gain respect and attention from critiques.

9/10
