Spelunky Review

Spelunky is a 2D platformer brought to you by Mossmouth.

Spelunky was a originally on the PC but has now been revamped for the XBLA.  With new graphics, a quirky soundtrack and the same unforgiving gameplay, will it be accepted into the Xbox universe?

You can play Spelunky as 1 of many characters and throughout the game you are able to unlock more.  You are basically an adventurer who is on a mission to get out of the shape changing mines.

You can use bombs and ropes in order to aid you escape but run out and you will need to buy some more or find some in the randomly placed boxes.  In order to kill enemies you will use a whip or some enemies can be jumped “Super Mario style”.

You start with 4 lives and in order to gain more you either have to save a damsel in distress or find a shopkeeper that will allow you to kiss a damsel which in turn supplies you with a life upon each kiss.  These are expensive but luckily you are surrounded by gold and jewels.  A word of warning would be that you shouldn’t steal from the shopkeeper.  He is a shotgun wielding crazy mofo if you get him started and the likely outcome will be you dying and having to start all over again.

If you run out of lives you will have to start the whole game again unless you have shortcuts unlocked.  Even thought this may sound frustrating, it isn’t as bad as you may assume.  Just be cautious and appreciate the lives you have and do go around thinking you’re untouchable because you’re definitely not!

Spelunky creates randomly generated levels every time you start again (trust me this will be often) and this is what makes the game so brilliant.  If you die you don’t have to see the same level over and over again but instead will only be familiar with the type of area such as a Jungle or Mine.

Spelunky is visually brilliant.  Very clean flash graphics with the fluid movement you would expect in such an unforgiving game.  Each are looks unique and fresh giving pleasure rather than pure frustration every time you die.

The soundtrack is pretty sweet but is the only part of the game that can get annoying at times.  Repetitive sounds have always annoyed me in games and Spelunky is no exception.

Spelunky is a very fun and rewarding game that should definitely be owned by every Xbox gamer.

Buy it now!!!

10/10
