The Mysterious Cities of Gold: Secret Paths Review
Produced by Ynnis interactive, The Mysterious Cities of Gold is a game based off a children’s anime program that was televised in the 80’s.
You control up to 3 characters Zia, Tao and Esteban all of which have different abilities in a limited timed puzzle adventure where you try to locate the new cities of gold within the heart of imperial china.
Basically, you have to travel from A to B, and collect a few things on the way whilst solving puzzles. It’s a simple idea but the puzzles do increase in difficulty, leaving you with a couple of moments where you will need to plan your move, but it never feels frustratingly hard which is a pro and a con depending on how you look at it.
At the end of each level, you’re scored in an Angry birds type way , where you’re judged on items collected, secret chest found and time it took to complete, giving you a maximum of three medals to earn. This also means that you can quickly restart or replay the levels at any time, should you want to 100% the game.
Visually the game looks great and is probably the best bit about it, overall. The scenery is great and the colours are lovely. The touch screen can be used as a map or as a control board to move your character around as needed. It all works well but there’s nothing too impressive here.
The main risk that will cause you to fail throughout the game is being caught by guards etc. Apart from that, the only real problem you will have is fighting boredom due to the games repetitive and dull gameplay.
